Oliver and Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton have been engaged in a playful war of words after the comedian took shots at the city during a spot on “Last Week Tonight,” prompting the mayor to suggest they will name the city’s sewage plant after the comedian.
In response, Oliver took the jab in stride and offered to donate $55,000 to charities in Danbury if Boughton actually went through with it, even offering to chip in the money to have a sign made.
However, the HBO variety show star set a deadline of Sunday, Sept. 6 for the mayor to respond.
Boughton has been teasing a response on social media, which was expected on Thursday, Sept. 3, but instead, the mayor posted on Twitter late Thursday afternoon that he’s “working on (the city’s) response for (Oliver), but something is coming soon … but not today.”
